Soon to be many

I always find it funny when I read bio’s written in third person. So, here you go, first person, about me, your teacher.

My name is Katia’ and I have been practicing yoga for as long as I can remember. In the early years I was initially drawn to yoga purely for the physical benefits; at that time I was an avid half marathoner/duathlon athlete. I wanted the strength, flexibility and conditioning that yoga offers. What I was was not expecting was to be immediately drawn to the discipline and beautiful philosophy of yoga.

Fast forward a few years (I do mean only a few), and I find myself in a life rich with amazing people, some loss, much love, and I am profoundly grateful and joyous to be here!

So much learning; still each day I learn as I teach and my students teach me. My yoga classes are a blend of the traditions that I have traveled to study and become certified in; Wisdom Flow Yoga (Anusara/Tantric), with Jennifer Lynn in Maui, Avisha Yoga (Meditation/Anusara), with Tom Machado in San Jose and (Mentoring/Hot Yoga) Tomasz Goetel in Phuket, Thailand.

My yoga classes are richly focused on helping students flow through poses, with strong emphasis on functional core strength and optimal joint alignment, as they move deeper into their postures and practice. Whether you are a beginning yogi or advanced in your practice, I tailor classes to challenge students of all levels, with modifications as needed.

Why Barre you say? About 2 years ago, I traded in my running shoes for bikini fitness heels and grippy Barre socks. I was prepping to compete in my first NPC Bikini Fitness show, and in addition to my coach kicking my booty every week in a gym, I wanted a class to alternate with that could do the same, without heavy weights and grunting!

That year I began teaching Barre for fun and discovered the incredible toning benefits and long, lean muscles that Barre classes offer.

I am currently continuing my education in Barre training, to bring booty lifting, heart raising, leg and body burning classes to my students!

As an added kick, I am adding a little HEAT to the Sunday Barre class!

Heal·ing1; the process of making or becoming sound or healthy again:

Having studied Health Sciences at PSU, I always knew that working with the body, in it’s natural form, was where I wanted to be. Assisting with restorative movement/bodywork, as the joints and muscles repair themselves and without knowing it, healing the heart.

My beautiful sister Ally, was diagnosed with breast cancer 5 years ago. It was at that time that I began focusing more on yoga as a therapeutic modality; for assistance in mobility and alignment, as patients recover after cancer treatment; as every day people wake up with achey joints and inflammation with fibromyalgia and Parkinson’s.

While I don’t know all the answers, I do know that I am honored to contribute however small, to any one person’s journey away from pain and discomfort. I am currently furthering my education in advanced integrative teaching, through yoga.

Thank your for taking the time to read my bio. I hope to see you in one, if not many of my classes.

Cristy Bonilla

A little bit about me…

Hi, my name is Cristy Bonilla and I am excited to be teaching Barre classes as part of the Studio 7Yoga tribe!

I am an island girl and grew up in beautiful Kaua’i. Three years ago I moved to the Portland-metro area, with my love and our adorable, yet mischievous dog. My love is studying engineering at OIT, while I work my way up, as an an accomplished stylist dancing my way through balayage and life.

The rich practice of Yoga and my love of Ballet, lead me to teach Barre classes, which is a blend of both disciplines.

I have studied/trained in Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Contemporary, Flamenco, Lyrical & HipHop to name a few.

At 13 years old, I fell in love with Ballet/dance and the mental/physical challenges that came with weekly classes. What began as one (1) class a week, quickly turned into 12-14 classes a week; countless nights rehearsing for recitals, local island events and competitions. After graduating, I pursued Dance Production at the University of Nevada, with a strong focus in dance performance(s) at festivals, dance production management, and Pilates.

I love to dance and it was natural that I also share my love of dance in private lessons to youth, which I did while in Kaua’i.

These things give our art it’s discipline; think length, breathe and and move with intention. My goal as an instructor and teacher is to train students to move mindfully, to be conscious in their space, and cultivate flexibility with strength while having fun! It is my hope that students are empowered and take these practices from my classes and apply beautiful things in their everyday life.

I do hope to see class soon!
